Gordon Wiegold joins team (17 Feb 2010)

Gordon Wiegold has been appointed as the new Community Liaison Officer for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service for the Mid North Coast.
Gordon, 40, is based in Laurieton (30 minutes south of Port Macquarie) and he will work with the communities from Forster to Macksville.
Having grown up in the Shoalhaven near Jervis Bay and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Communication at the University of Canberra, Gordon spent nearly 20 years in the newspaper industry – his most recent appointment as Editor of The Canberra Times Sunday newspaper.
“I was proud to work on very community-oriented newspapers but I was also part of covering major breaking news and was on the scene reporting at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Thredbo disasters and the Canberra bushfires where I had to juggle reporting with looking after my own family’s safety as the bushfires burnt around us,” he said.
More recently Gordon has been instigating and overseeing a number of community drawcards as Events Co-ordinator of the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce – the biggest of which is the Slice Of Haven Food and Wine Festival which currently draws several thousand people to the town of Laurieton each year for a gourmet food and wine extravaganza.
“I want to see the region embrace the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and all it stands for by joining in our family-friendly events that are both fun and entertaining,” Gordon said.
“I am looking forward to assisting the service’s greatest asset – its volunteers – people who have been touched or helped by the service and people who are genuinely involved in helping to save lives by the work they do and funds they tirelessly accumulate.”
Gordon has been married to Kim for 16 years and they have three children (two boys and a girl): Tyson 13, Tahlia 10 and Chaz 7.
When applying for this job, Gordon summed up his intentions in one sentence: “For the rest of my career, I want to spend every working day making the area I live in a better place – and what better way is there to do this than by working for the WRHS.
“I want to make sure the business community of the Mid North Coast continues to fund this invaluable service which could one day save your life, the life of your children, your mother or your father,” Gordon said.
