If you think that Broome to Newcastle is a long trip by plane, spare a thought for the 12 Hunter people who have cycled 5,400 kilometres in the past five weeks in the name of research and rescue.
The team will be welcomed home this Tuesday (21 July 2009) by the two organisations it is supporting; the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).
Team Captain Alan Moyle, speaking from Byron Bay four days out from Newcastle said that they had received fantastic support from people along the journey.
‘Near Longreach, we stopped for a break on a driveway at the end of a big property. A woman, she must have been around 80 drove out to see who we were. She joined us for morning tea, and before we left, she drove back to her house to get some money so she could make a donation,’ Alan said.
The generosity of people like this, combined with the individual and corporate support the riders received from the Hunter, means that almost $40,000 has been raised for HMRI and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
