Training Requirements

Chief Pilot

  • Approved by the Civil Aviation Authority as a Chief Pilot
  • License, ratings and endorsements as required by the scope of the operations
  • 3,000 hours Pilot in Command helicopters
  • 1,500 hours Pilot in Command turbine helicopters
  • 1,000 hours Pilot in Command multi engine helicopters
  • 150 hours Pilot in.Command Night VFR helicopters
  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience as Chief Pilot or Senior Pilot of a helicopter organisation
  • A command instrument rating of at least 5 renewals.

Check and Training Captain

In addition to the qualification experience levels for a multi engine captain the following are also required:

  • License, ratings and endorsements as required by the scope of the operations
  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience as either an Instructor or Check and Trainer in a helicopter organisation.

Captain Multi-Engine Helicopter (Rescue)

  • License, ratings and endorsements as required by the scope of the operations
  • 2,500 Pilot in Command helicopters
  • 1,000 Pilot in Command helicopters turbine
  • 50 Pilot in Command helicopters night VIFR
  • At least 10 hours on type.

Captain Multi-Engine Helicopter (Inter Hospital)

License, ratings and endorsements as required by the scope of the operations

  • 2,000 Pilot in Command helicopters
  • 1,000 Pilot in Command helicopters turbine
  • 50 Pilot in Command helicopters night VFR.

Co-Pilot

License, ratings and endorsements as required by the scope of the operations

  • 700 hours helicopters
  • 50 hours turbine engine helicopter.

Captain Single Engine Helicopter

License, ratings and endorsements as required by the scope of the operations

  • 2,000 Pilot in Command, helicopters
  • 500 Pilot in Command helicopters turbine
  • 50 Pilot in Command helicopters night VFR.

Crew Chief

  • CASA approved for training and certification of winch operators
  • 1,000 flight hour's experience as an aircrew
  • Minimum 5 years full time experience as an aircrew in an HEMS/SAR operation
  • minimum of 1 year full time must be with a civilian HEMS/SAR operator
  • Minimum of 2 years previous Check and Training experience
  • Note: Military experience in a similar environment will be considered.

Rescue Crew

Casual Rescue Crew positions become available from time to time and are advertised in the employment sections of local newspapers (normally on Saturdays) and on this Website. Due to the large number of enquiries and applications for these positions correspondence will not be answered. General requirements for Casual Rescue Crew include:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application

  • Hold a current drivers license

  • Have a Surf Bronze Medallion

  • Hold a certificate in Advanced Resuscitation

  • Hold a Senior First Aid Certificate

  • Be able to pass the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service fitness test which includes a 600m non-stop swim in under 14 minutes. Swim tests are held twice yearly

  • Complete the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Rescue Swimmers’ Course. This is a twice yearly test for all Crew members. 

  • Ongoing trainoing includes

    • Down. the wire training as determined by the operator SAR operations
    • Current Advanced Resuscitation Certificate
    • Night Winching
    • Stretcher winching
    • Water winching
    • HUET
    • Communications and radio procedures
    • Physical standard as determined by the operator.

    Aircrew (Winch Operator)

    Must attain the minimum qualifications of rescue crew Winch Operator endorsement in accordance with the relevant C.A.S.A requirements

    • Minimum of 10 hours winch operations flight training over a 3 month period
    • SAR operations
    • Water winching
    • Night winching
    • Current Senior First Aid Certificate
    • HUET
    • Communication and radio procedures
    • Navigation and flight procedures (IFR/V17R as appropriate)
    • Physical standard as determined by the operator
    • Note: Military experience in a similar environment will be considered.

    The above minimums assume the following:

    • That they are not retrospective and current operators and staff will be unaffected with the sole exception of the qualifications of the Check and Training Captain. All new pilots and air crew and current Check and Training Captains should meet the above standards.
    • It is recognised that exceptional circumstances may prevent these minimums from being attained. In such cases the Chief Pilot/Chief Executive Officer of the Approved Aero Medical Helicopter Service may apply to the Ambulance Service for exemption from the above giving an explanation of the standards not reached and how it is being addressed. The Ambulance Service will seek appropriate professional advice in consideration of the request.
