The new building will be opened by The Hon Jodi McKay MP as the Minister for the Hunter at:

Just a little grain will help save lives (03 Nov 2008)

Farmers in the New England – North West are donating a tonne or two of their wheat grain this harvest to help save lives. And the reason is that of the 1,350 life saving missions the Service has undertaken since its inception in 2000, many of them have been to accidents on farms and properties.

Those who have been injured and transported by the helicopter from farms have included people who have been crushed by cattle, thrown from horses, fallen from bikes and injured by farm machinery. A significant number have been children, particularly from quad bike and horse incidents.

A partnership between the farming community, Auscott, AWB and GrainCorp will see farmers make a tax deductible donation of wheat to be delivered against the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Service General Manager, Richard Jones, said that this was a significant campaign for the Rescue Helicopter.

‘With the support of many local farmers, Auscott, AWB and GrainCorp the grain donation fundraising campaign has enabled the Rescue Helicopter to continue work in our community to help people when and where it is needed.

‘This campaign is particularly appreciated by the Service because it has seen farmers donating some of their best crop during times that have been pretty tough in their sector,’ he said.

The initiative was introduced by the Rescue Helicopter and AWB in 2006. This is the third harvest for the campaign.

Farmers wishing to donate a tonne or two of grain can do so by quoting the National Grower Register
Number 12650596 or the AWB Grower Number 55288592 on the AWB Cash at Silo Price. Delivery dockets can then be faxed to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service on 02 6766 7268.

Each year the Rescue Helicopter undertakes more than 170 missions in the New England-North West, transporting people from accident scenes and transferring critically ill patients from small, rural hospitals to larger regional or urban hos

Careflight telemarketing misleading (17 Oct 2008)

The Editor
It is disappointing that NRMA Careflight confuses the reasoning behind its telemarketing in the region.
NRMA Careflight crews and medical teams provide first class care as do those from other services.
However, the fact is that any funding from the community does not go to the operation of an aircraft. NRMA Careflight does not operate its own aircraft but one owned by a Canadian company. If the community are happy to support NRMA Careflight knowing the absolute facts, that of course is their decision.
Medical and air crews that fly in NRMA Careflight missions are fully funded by NSW Ambulance under contract. If, as Mr Badham says in his recent letter (NDL date to be inserted), those contracts do not cover certain on-costs one might reasonably question the commercial decisions that resulted in that situation.
I do not wish to appear to be simply criticising another service but to assure the community that the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service does not telemarket and that every dollar that the community raises helps to ensure that no patient ever has to pay for what we believe is this essential service.

Simsmetal supports Service (17 Sep 2008)

One of the region’s best-known companies, Simsmetal NSW, is joining the elite logo sponsor group for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

For the past year Simsmetal has sponsored the Service’s Crew Chief Graham Nickisson.

Rescue Helicopter General Manager, Richard Jones, said that it was pleasing to sign an agreement with the world’s and Australia’s leading metal recycling firm.

“Hunter people are very aware of the Simsmetal name and we welcome the additional contribution the company is making to their safety and protection through this generous sponsorship.”

Simsmetal NSW General Manager, Jason Whitaker, said the company was proud to further contribute to the community through the Rescue Service.

“Simsmetal and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service are both synonymous with the Hunter. The local community has supported us for many years and now we have the chance to give something back,’ he said.

Mr Jones said the community was reminded on an almost daily basis how important it was to have immediate and prompt response to medical transfers and to emergencies such as road accidents.

“Simsmetal has provided us all with added protection.”

”Each year we need to raise, with the help of the community and sponsors, about $6 million to ensure that no-one who needs the services of the Rescue Helicopter ever has to pay.

‘Simsmetal understand the commercial imperatives of operating this service and of preparing for future demand. Their commitment is very welcome’ he said.

Simsmetal is the World’s largest metal recycler and has been in the Newcastle area for more than 30 years. The company is presently involved in many community based recycling programs. It also sponsors a range of education and environmental programs.

Yellow cattle tags to help Rescue Helicopter (28 Aug 2008)

Cattle in the New England - North West have become the newest fundraisers for the community’s own Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

In a unique initiative Elders Rural Tamworth and Volunteer Support Groups of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service have launched a new fundraising program that will encourage local farmers to tag a calf with a special yellow tag.

Once the calf was ready for sale it would be sold at auction and the amount would be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Service Volunteer Coordinator, Debby Herdegen, said that the Bingara Volunteer Support Group had already tagged its first calf – a white calf called Westpac.

‘The New England - North West Groups with the generous support of Elders Rural in Tamworth created the yellow tag fundraiser to assist the farming community support the Service. For some time the farming community has asked how it could, as a group and as individuals, support a Service that so often was needed in their community,’ Debby said.

‘A significant number of the emergency response missions the helicopter and its crews attend are to farming and rural accidents,’ she said.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service yellow tags are available through the 15 Volunteer Support Groups around the New England – North West region and at the Services Tamworth office by calling 6766 6641.

STORM HEROES HONOURED IN PARLIAMENT (24 Jun 2008)

Six members of the Newcastle-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service were today recognised in the Federal Parliament after receiving an international bravery award for their role in the rescue of 22 crew from the stranded Pasha Bulker during last year’s June long weekend storms.

Minister for Transport Anthony Albanese and Leader of the Nationals Warren Truss offered bi-partisan thanks on behalf of the Federal Parliament to the Rescue Helicopter Crew.

On Friday night, the six crew members were issued with Certificates of Commendation by the International Maritime Organisation, following their nomination by the Australian Government for these prestigious international bravery awards.

“This month our community has been commemorating the events of the storm a year ago,” Member for Newcastle Sharon Grierson said today.

“The crew’s commendations show the international significance of those events, and put our Rescue Service up there with the best in the world.”

“The commendations are an appropriate recognition of the bravery, skill and professionalism shown by the Rescue Helicopter crew.”

“Our community is rightly proud of their efforts in saving 22 lives that day from great danger, and I join with all Novocastrians in thanking them.”

The six recipients are:
· Captain Ian McFadden and Captain Ian Osborne (Pilots),
· Graham Nickisson (Crew Chief),
· Peter Praniess (Aircrewman), and
· Glen Ramplin and Nathan Langham (Rescue Crewmen).

International bravery awards (23 Jun 2008)

Six members of the Hunter Region Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service have won awards from the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.

They were recognised over the weekend for their bravery when they rescued 22 seamen from the stricken bulk carrier Pasha Bulker when she ran aground during the storms of the June 2007.

Service General Manager, Richard Jones, said that the pilots and crews were nominated by the Federal Government.

“Images of the outstanding efforts of our people flashed around the world and reminded us all how their training, their professionalism and their commitment to the community are so valued and precious.”

The helicopter rescue involved the winching of each crew member from the stranded ship in severe weather conditions, with all safely evacuated without injury.

The awarded personnel are Pilots, Captain Ian McFadden and Captain Ian Osborne; Crew Chief, Graham Nickisson; Aircrewman, Peter Praniess; and Rescue Crewmen, Glen Ramplin and Nathan Langham.

Mr Jones said the nomination reflected the Government’s and community’s appreciation and admiration of their selfless work at the scene of one of Australia’s major maritime incidents.

According to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority – the national search and rescue coordinator – this rescue involved the biggest airlift from a bulk carrier in recent Australian maritime history.

Careflight apologises (23 Jun 2008)

The people of the Hunter and beyond have been offered an apology by Careflight for telemarketing in the Hunter.

General Manager of the Hunter based Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Richard Jones, said that Sydney based Careflight service had advised that there was a mistake in its telemarketing activities that led to misleading fundraising in the region recently.

‘The Rescue Helicopters that serve the people of the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast, New England and North West region’s of NSW does not use any form of telemarketing,’ he said.

‘Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service was advised a few weeks ago by a number of people who were confused by a fundraising campaign that asked for donations in return for a soft toy bear. We immediately approached the Careflight management team.
‘Careflight provided an unreserved apology on Friday for campaigning in the region,’ he said.

People of the Hunter and beyond should remain vigilant. If you are unsure about any kind of fundraising for rescue helicopters they should contact the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service on toll free 1800 155 155.

‘The Y Group will encourage students to share ideas and carry out fundraising activities. Importantly, students will have the opportunity to work as part of a group, develop teamwork and leadership skills while helping to create new events for young people and support existing events for the Service.

Pasha Bulker rescue nominated for international award (16 Apr 2008)

The Australian Government has nominated the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (Hunter Region) for the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.

New building on the way (10 Apr 2008)

Construction of the new administration and operational building is well under way at the Broadmeadow Base.

The older buildings suffered considerable damage in the June 2007 storms. Those of you familiar with the site know that the base sits on a narrow piece of land near EnergyAustralia Stadium between two major stormwater channels.

Board Chairman Cliff Marsh said that funding for this new building was available because of the sensible budget approach by the Board which was boosted by the generous support from the Newcastle Permanent Flood Relief Fund.

‘The Service was fortunate to be one of a number of local community organisations to benefit form the generosity of the local people and the Newcastle Permanent,’ Mr Marsh said.

The $600,000 donation coupled with the Board’s long term plan has enabled us to proceed with the considerable construction process.

‘Nonetheless, this and the need to upgrade our second helicopter at Broadmeadow and our helicopter in the New England and North West to twin-engine machines will mean additional fund raising must occur over the next few years.

‘The Service’s approach to community fundraising is always to plan long term so that those who wish to contribute, whether as individuals or groups, can do so within their own budgets,’ he said.

Bobbing ducks raise $80.000 (31 Jan 2008)

Some 8,956 rubber ducks braved the tide, wind, rocks and drains to compete in the fifth annual Energy Australia Ducks4Dollars event on Australian Day. The event raised a record $80,000 for Hunter Branch Surf Clubs and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
The event featured a number of rubber duck ‘races’. The winners were Janine King of Newcastle who collects $2,500. When Janine was contacted at lunch-time Saturday she was at the John Hunter Hospital with her 10 year old son who was badly dumped in the surf. Nobbys lifesavers treated him for spinal injuries and he was transferred by Ambulance. Fortunately he is okay.
In second place was the duck that was adopted by Ben Smyth of Rankin Park who won $1,500. Ben mentioned to the Rescue Helicopter how many times he sees the choppers go to the John Hunter Hospital and appreciates the amount of time and effort that this Service provides to the people of the Hunter and Mid North Coast.
Both Ben and Janine purchased their ducks at the Beach Hotel Merewether from Merewether Surf Club.
Third place was claimed by Brad Wanchulak who purchased his adoption/ticket from Nobbys Surf Club. Brad recently broke the Australian Ice Hockey point scoring record playing for the North Stars.
Additionally, 370 Corporate red ducks raced for local businesses and people. The winner was Matt Freedman of Redback Solutions whose company set up the website to sell tickets for the event.
Two new races were introduced this year. The Sponsors’ Big Yellow Duck featuring sponsor logos were launched from a surf rescue board. First across the line was NEWFM. The race was 'called' by Mike Rabbitt who despite his best efforts could not get the NBN Duck across the line.
The other new race saw ducks representing Hunter Branch Surf Life Saving Clubs. Each duck sported a minature club competition cap. Despite a close call it was Nobbys by a bill.

Paddling ducks help keep Helicopters in the air (17 Jan 2008)

Thousands of people in the Newcastle area have again become the adopted parents of a small rubber ducks for a special fundraising event for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and local Surf Clubs.

The EnergyAustralia Ducks 4 Dollars Australia Day event will be held on Saturday 26 January 2008 at Newcastle’s foreshore. Four duck races will be held at Newcastle Harbour adjacent to the Stockton Ferry Wharf from 10.30 am on the day.

The first ‘race’ will be the Corporate Duck race featuring red ducks which have been ‘adopted’ by local businesses. They will be racing for the perpetual Black Duck Trophy and a host of prizes donated by major sponsor Energy Australia.

The second race will be the Hunter Branch Surf Club contest where each ‘big yellow duck’ will wear a competition hat representing each club in the Branch. This is a new race and is sure to add a lot of interest to the day.

This will be followed by another ‘big yellow duck’ race with each duck representing the corporate sponsors of the event.

To complete the event the little yellow ducks will bob and ‘race’ their way along the ‘course’ for their adopted owners for a share of $5,000 in prizes. This year more than 6,000 little ducks are expected to take to the water.

Ducks can be ‘adopted’ by purchasing certificates any local Surf Club, Westpac Bank, the Rescue Helicopter Service, Star Newspaper or by filling out a coupon in The Herald or The Star newspapers or by visiting www.ducks4dollars.com.au

‘It is the Hunter’s proud claim that no patient has ever had to pay and never will,” says Service Chairman, Cliff Marsh OAM.

In the past year the Service has flown more than 1200 missions. Of these more than 750 were what are designated as primary missions and more than 400 as secondary.

Mr Marsh said that each person who ‘adopted’ a duck in the EnergyAustralia Ducks 4 Dollars event was helping to ensure that someone in need w

Service wins 5 year contract (21 Dec 2007)

The Hunter Region Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has been awarded a new five-year contract to provide aero medical and rescue services in the Hunter, Mid North Coast, New England and North West.

General Manager, Richard Jones, said today that the Service regarded the renewed contract as reward for the high standards the Service had reached in recent years.

The Service conducted more than 1200 missions in the past year with 750 primary missions, 400 secondary, 35 SAR and 26 police tasks.

“We again made the commitment to the Minister for Health and the Government that we would provide a first class Service using twin engine aircraft to support the work of the NSW Ambulance and Department of Health in the delivery of health care.”

Mr Jones said that the Service had purchased a second twin-engine aircraft for the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions. This helped ensure the Rescue Helicopter could meet the new requirements of the Government for medical and rescue missions. The aircraft had now gone into service after preliminary fit out.

Mr Jones said funding of a second twin-engine aircraft had been possible through wide community support and in particular outstanding support from the United Mineworkers Federation.

Mr Jones said it was particularly pleasing for the Service that the tender process was closed as this was evidence of confidence in the Rescue Helicopter to deliver the standards the Government rightly demanded.

“This is only possible because our communities support us in every way possible. The support of our sponsors, Westpac, NBN Coal & Allied, AWU, Caltex, TESA, AP Foods, Transport Group, Veolia, The Herald, EnergyAustralia, JOBLINK Plus, Rotary, BAE Systems, Super Network Radio, Quest, Baiada, IGA , NSW Minerals Council and Mountain Bike Bash in invaluable throughout the regions. Rescue Helicopter Board of Directors to meet in Wauchope this week (22 Nov 2007)

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service will hold its Annual Board Meeting at Wauchope Country Club on Friday 23 November at 5.00 pm.

As well as the Board and senior management of the Rescue Helicopter more than 20 local people are expected to attend the event, including members the Wauchope Volunteer Support group and the local community.

The group will present its annual fundraising amount to the Board at the event – which is expected to be around $30,000.

In the past 12 months 13 people from the Hastings area have been assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service after sustaining critical injuries in accidents on the road, at the beach, at their place of work and in their homes. Mineworkers come to the rescue (16 Nov 2007)

Mineworkers in the Hunter have again dug deep for the community’s rescue helicopter service with a $60,000 donation.

Ian Murray, President of the United Mineworkers’ Federation North District and Chairman of the Mineworkers Trust said today that the donation was a joint contribution by the two organisations.

“Every year demand for the rescue and medical transfer services grows with more than 1000 missions flown this year. Perhaps no other sector of the workforce understands better than miners the need for the fastest possible transfer of injured or ill people to emergency care.”

The General Manager of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Richard Jones, said that mineworkers and their union were among the most valued of supporters.

“Their contributions are outstanding and reflects their broader interest in their community. An example was the contribution the Trust made to youth through providing both opportunities and support to advance education and careers. “

“Miners have led from the front helping the Service to win wider community support for funding of the constant challenge to upgrade services and equipment.

“This has enabled us to expand our services, to provide 24 hour a day, 365 day a year coverage for more than one million people from the Central Coast to the North Coast and in the New England and North West regions.”

Rescue Helicopter training gets a hoist (18 Oct 2007)

A hoist and flight simulator was officially opened at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service today.
The stationary helicopter is a training platform for pilots and aircrew, boasting the latest simulation technology for both pilot training and rescue procedures.
The helicopter hull, complete with Service yellow and red paint job, has been located at the Rescue Helicopter’s Broadmeadow base hangar and includes the latest hoist and flight simulation technology.
Rescue Helicopter General Manager, Richard Jones, said the simulator was a valuable addition to the Rescue Helicopter’s training resources and was the result of outstanding community and business support, particularly Macquarie Generation.
‘The simulator is a cost effective way to provide hoist and flight training to our pilot, crew, paramedics and medical crews. It will mean that there will be less of a need to use the working helicopters, less wear and tear on them and a way of managing risk and safely for hoist training,’ he said.
‘We also anticipate that other crews from around the nation and abroad will use the facilities,’ he said.
Hoisting is one of the most precarious and dangerous activities undertaken by rescue helicopters worldwide. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service is considered a leader in the field of hoist training. Crew and pilots from the Service continue to work closely with rescue helicopters around the globe to improve use and safety standards.
Rescue Helicopter Senior Pilot, Peter Cook, said that the simulator was a close copy of the hoist system used in the Bell 412 twin engine helicopter.
‘It uses a three stage projection visual system and realistic sound to imitate real world movement,’ he said
The aircraft used is a Bell 204 UH-1B aircraft and was built in December 1964. It served on the front line in the Vietnam War and then border reconnaissance in Germany until 1972. The aircraft was then used for fire fighting and as a movie prop before being donated to the Westp

Joblink Plus Renews Rescue Sponsorship (16 Oct 2007)

Joblink Plus has renewed a Logo Rights Sponsorship of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service – New England-North West region.

Rescue Helicopter General Manager, Richard Jones, said that the Joblink Plus support was greatly valued and was important to the ongoing provision of aeromedical services for the region.

“The New England-North West Service replaced the Bell 407 helicopter, that crash landed near Warialda earlier this year, with the twin engine BK-117. The support of organisations like Joblink Plus makes sure that the Service continues to provide services to our community with medical transfer, emergency response, search and rescue support, while still investing in more efficient equipment and training,” he said.

Joblink Plus’ Chief Executive Officer, Chris Sheppeard, said the organisation’s decision to continue to support their local Rescue Helicopter Service was unanimous among the Board of Directors.

“We see this relationship as a perfect fit for the two organisations. Joblink is celebrating its 21st year of providing the opportunity for people to rebuild their lives.

“Joblink Plus is proud to be able to support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, and has contributed financially since the New England-North West operation began in August 2000. The continuation of logo rights sponsorship for a further 12 month period from September 2007 makes this the fourth year of Joblink Plus’ formal logo rights sponsorship,” Mr Sheppeard said.

Big Rigs Driving Westpac Rescue Helicopter (08 Oct 2007)

Don’t be surprised when next month you see a parade of some 200 big rig trucks trail through Newcastle.

They are part of one of this region’s most successful transport awareness and fundraising initiatives.

The 14th Annual Road Transport Awareness Day will be held on Sunday 4 November 2007.

The day begins with a procession of trucks at 9.30am Sandgate Markets to Scott St, past Fort Scratchley, along Foreshore Drive and finishing at Newcastle’s Foreshore Park for display.

Regional Helicopter Rescue Service receives assistance from RRF (11 Sep 2007)

The outstanding contribution that the Region’s Rescue Helicopter Service provided to the Hunter and Central Coast communities over the course of the June long weekend storms and subsequent flooding has been recognised with a donation from the Regional Relief Fund.

The Fund, established by Newcastle Permanent in the days immediately after the June long weekend storm and floods, has raised over $5 million. This money is being used to assist the various charity and community service organisations that continue to be involved in the clean up and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

The Rescue Helicopter service will receive a donation of $617,000 from the Regional Relief Fund. As well as specific operational costs incurred flying missions on that weekend, the Rescue Service suffered significant damage to their headquarters which were inundated with storm water.

Chairman of the Rescue Service, Cliff Marsh OAM, said that he was excited and extremely grateful to the Regional Relief Fund for their consideration.

“We are delighted and very humbled that our involvement should be recognised in this way.

“The Service has a constant need for funding and the events of that weekend, both operationally and because of the damage that our headquarters sustained has certainly placed a strain on our resources.

“This donation from the Regional Relief Fund will enable us to recover our position and ensure that our operational capability is not compromised in any way.

“It will also enable us to devote more of our attention and energy towards the completion of our new administrative block which, when completed, will make our entire operation much more efficient,” Mr Marsh said.

Chairman of Newcastle Permanent and the Regional Relief Fund, Mr Michael McDonald, said the Rescue Service was a worthy recipient for assistance.

Simsmetal supports Service (04 Sep 2007)

Simsmetal NSW has announced a new partnership arrangement that will see the organisation sponsor Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Crew Chief Graham Nickisson.

Rescue Helicopter General Manager, Richard Jones, said that it was pleasing to sign an agreement with Simsmetal that would entitle the organisation to wider recognition for its work within the local community.

‘This support comes at a time when we not only have to maintain our high standards but we have the challenge of raising funds for a replacement aircraft and a new administration building after it was damaged in the June long weekend storms. Each year we need to raise, with the help of the community and sponsors, about $4 million of the total $6 million budget to ensure this essential community service continues,’ he said.

‘Simsmetal understand the commercial imperatives of preparing for future demand which is evident by its environmental project work and their commitment is very welcome’ he said.

Simsmetal is the World’s largest metal recycler and has been in the Newcastle area for more than 30 years. The company is presently involved in many community based recycling programs. It also sponsors a range of education and environmental programs.

Simsmetal NSW General Manager, Jason Whitaker, said the opportunity to sponsor Crew Chief Graham Nickisson was a very welcome one.

Simsmetal and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service have both been supportive of the local mining community for many years. The local community has supported us for many years and now we have the chance to give something back,’ he said.

‘The Hunter community is well served by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and we are very proud to have the Simsmetal logo displayed on Crew Chief Nickisson’s flightsuit,’ he said.

Come to the Cabaret! (16 Aug 2007)

It will be an evening of fun, frivolity and fantastic giveaways when Harley for Helicopters Volunteer Support Group hosts its Annual Charity Cabaret Event in Port Macquarie next month.

This important fundraising event for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service will be held on Saturday 15 September at the 2007 Entertainment Restaurant of the Year, Tommy’s by the Beach

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Volunteer Coordinator, Janine Chandler, said that the Charity Cabaret Event will provide guests with an opportunity to sample the exciting new Summer menu while enjoying the show while supporting the Rescue Helicopter.

‘In the past 12 months the Service has undertaken 24 missions in Port Macquarie area –these have been to assist people after motor vehicle accidents, medical trauma and conditions as well as some search and rescue missions,’ she said.

‘Funds raised from the event ensure that no-one who needs to be assisted by the rescue Helicopter will ever have to pay,’ Janine said.

Commencing at 6.30pm, the night will include entertainment, a delicious three course meal, an auction and raffles as well as complementary drinks and canapés on arrival. Tickets are $60 per person and are available from Westpac Port Macquarie.

Last year the event raised $13,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Event organisers Harleys for Helicopters with the assistance of the Port Macquarie Westpac branch and local businesses are hoping to raise more than $15,000.

BK -117’s Official Take-off (24 Jul 2007)

The much-awaited BK-117 Westpac Rescue twin engine helicopter for the New England and North West region was officially launched today.

Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service Chairman, Cliff marsh, OAM, said the launch was a special an emotional occasion for the regional community.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support of the people of the New England and North West following the crash near Warialda in February, and are thrilled to have this new machine which will provide even higher levels of service to the region,” Mr Marsh said.

“The BK-117 is one of the best-equipped in Australia. Its twin engines provide greater safety, and importantly for its vital role, there is more room for medical staff to attend to the patient in flight. There are also more and wider stretchers for patient comfort.”

Mr Marsh said superior navigation systems, including enhanced radar that enabled the machine to avoid bad weather, twin GPS and the capacity to monitor multiple radio frequencies, giving better situational awareness, all contributed to the improved safety.

The launch was attended by Chairman of the Tamworth Advisory Committee (TAC), and Federal Member for New England, Tony Windsor, as well as TAC members, Peter Draper, MP, and Richard Torbay, MP and NSW Speaker.

Mr Marsh said on-going training and implementation of the highest safety standards demanded by the Service was starkly demonstrated when the Bell 407 crashed en route to a motor vehicle accident at Warialda. In no small part the skill of pilot, Dave Davies, and response actions by crewman, Jamie Yeo, Dr Chris Trethewy and paramedic Stuart Harris had meant all walked away uninjured.

While this was a time for celebration for the Service and the community it was also time to pause to remember the three young people who died in the motor vehicle accident, Mr Marsh said.

“The Warialda community was hit hard by the loss and we mourn with them.”

Pasha Bulker thanks Rescue Helicopter (27 Jun 2007)

The Pasha Bulker ship management company, Fukujin Kisen Co Ltd of Japan, has thanked the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service air crew members for their “exceptional efforts in rescuing the crew of the Pasha Bulker, after it was swept aground on Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle on Friday, June 8, 2007.”

The Fukujin Kisen President wrote to thank the Service and the shipping company has made a $30,000 donation to support its rescue activities, saying: “People’s lives often depend on your rescue work, and we would like to support your valuable activity.”

General Manager of the Broadmeadow-based helicopter rescue service, Mr Richard Jones, said he and the air crew involved in the rescue of Pasha Bulker’s crew appreciated the ship owner’s recognition.

“We greatly appreciate the letter of thanks and the company’s donation. The Rescue Helicopter is largely funded through donations and community volunteer support with some assistance from the NSW Department of Health. We have been particularly busy recently, so this support is very welcome,” Mr Jones said.

In its letter of thanks to the two helicopter crews involved in the rescue, Fukujin Kisen said “The company, the ship’s Master and crew are deeply appreciative of the skills and superb teamwork on that day. Winching to safety the ship’s 21 crew and officers, in extreme conditions that local meteorologists described as equivalent to a cyclone, was heroic work. We are most grateful and extend our heartfelt thanks.”

Annual ball postponed (14 Jun 2007)

More than 1300 people will attend the Hunter’s annual Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Ball a little later this year.
With advice from the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, the Rescue Helicopter has rescheduled the Newcastle ball to be held on Friday 21 September 2007.
The giant ball which raises in excess of $100,000 each year for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service was to be held later this month. But due to extensive storm damage to the Newcastle Entertainment Centre’s catering facilities the decision was made today to postpone the event.
Service Event Coordinator, Kylie Eakin, said that while postponing the event would disappoint some, it was important to allow the Centre to fully recover from storm damage and then be able to provide an excellent event for our guests in September.
Tickets held for the June event are valid for the 21 September event.

Service helps storm ravaged region (12 Jun 2007)

Crews from the Hunter Region Service successfully completed what is certainly their most dangerous mission when a giant bulk carrier ran aground at Newcastle last Friday.

Our pilots hovered over the ship in extraordinary winds and rain while crewmen winched the 22 crew members of the Pasha Bulker to safety.

Their bravery immediately won international attention as news crews from around Australia relayed their exceptional efforts.

Nine people died in tragedies created by the weather conditions throughout the region but thankfully there were no injuries in the ship rescue.

More than 50 cyclists and their support team will hit the road this Saturday (24 February 2007) in the 12th annual Wests Cycle Classic raising money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The group of mountain bike enthusiasts will head off on a new and challenging 650 kilometre ride that will take them through the Central Coast and Hawkesbury regions.

The riders will tackle all types of terrain from sandy cycle paths to rugged bush tracks on the Great North Walk.

Starting at the Helicopter's Base in Newcastle, the group will travel south to Shelly Beach, across the mountains to Wiseman's Ferry, and wind their way back through Cessnock and Lake Macquarie. The ride will return to Newcastle next Saturday (3 March).

Fundraising alert (03 Nov 2006)

The Hunter Region Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service is warning residents that current telephone marketing for funds is not coming from the Service.

General Manager, Richard Jones, said today that the Service never uses telemarketing for fund raising.

“While those telephoning people in the Hunter at present may be legitimately working for other helicopter services that serve other regions in the State, they do not represent the Hunter’s own Rescue Service.”

Mr Jones said all funds raised by the Service remain in the region and ensure that no-one who needs to be moved by the helicopters ever has to pay in the Hunter and Mid North Coast.

He said that if people were in any doubt they should contact the Service either by telephoning the base on 1800 155 155 or via the web site at www.rescuehelicopter.com.au
