The rescue crewman assists in the rear of the aircraft with the securing of all equipment, safety in and around the helicopter and Down the Wire Operations (DTWO). The Rescue Crewmen are employed on a casual basis, and work other fulltime employment in the Police, Ambulance, Surf Life Saving, Electrical Trade or Medical field.
Heath Aland (Casual Rescue Crewman)
Heath joined the Helicopter Service in October 2007. He was born in Newcastle and attended Lambton High School. Heath currently works with the NSW Fire Brigade, and is stationed at Newcastle. He has two children, aged 5 and 4. Heath has played Rugby League all his life and has played first grade with Western Suburbs and South Newcastle. He enjoys spending time with his children, going to the beach, keeping fit, surfing and travelling.
Michael Legge (Casual Rescue Crewman)
Michael joined the Service in early 2007. He was born in Newcastle, attended Lambton High School and has been involved with swimming since the age of 3, teaching children to swim for the past 7 years at Coughlins Swim Centre. He was Age Australian Champion in 1998, 1999 & 2000 in the butterfly & individual medley categories. He also trialled for the 2000 Olympics. Michael enjoys playing water polo with Lake Macquarie Club when not teaching swimming or flying with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Ray Smith ( Rescue Crewman Tamworth)
Ray Smith has worked with the Helicopter Service since August 2000 being part of the original crew. Ray loves the challenge of being a helicopter rescue crewman. He grew up in Dorrigo NSW on a dairy farm. He served in the NSW Police Force for 27 years and is presently involved with life guarding duties with Tamworth Regional Council. Ray became involved in rescue work through the Lennox Head SLSC and the Water Police at Ballina. For relaxation Ray enjoys a weekly golf game, his other interests are target pistol and rifle shooting. He is an avid traveller usually to out to the way places back packing and trekking the mountainous regions of the world.
Joshua Smythe (Casual Rescue Crewman)
Joshua was born in Jervis Bay and moved to Newcastle in 1999. He currently works for the NSW Ambulance Service and commenced working with the Helicopter Service in early 2007. He has been a member of Cooks Hill Surf Club for 2 years and plays soccer and surfs in his leisure time. Josh is married to Bianca and has 3 children.
